7 Major Problems in Education System in India

The education system almost all over the world has remained the same for the past few decades. It is quite interesting that a field that caters to growth hasn’t seen much growth for a long time. There was a time of gurukul in India which is similar to a boarding school.

Education in India has had importance for a long time, though knowledge and education might have remained among a few sections of society. It is today more accessible to children yet the quality of it remains at an unsatisfying low.

The education system also has its issues. It’s almost as if schools forgot to prepare students for their future and instead took memory-based tests annually and let them go. Don’t get me wrong the problems in the education system in India aren’t just memory-based tests. “Education system issues” is an endless list. There are a lot of current problems in the education system. Let’s try to understand them better.

  • Our education system failed to teach some major life skills

School curriculums do no provide sex education. It shows with our current population. Most students horrifyingly explain how in 10th either reproduction chapter was all together skipped or wasn’t explained clearly enough. Our country needs to provide our youth with the equipment to understand reproduction and be given sex education. It is quite shameful how educators shy away from this topic.

  • Curriculums include nothing about taxes

Imagine the horror of trying to figure out how to do taxes or even what you require to do taxes. It is one of the major life skills yet no school curriculums include it. This is the problem in the education system in India. We do not teach our students how to do taxes. This is one of the major current problems in India.

  • Money management

Not only taxes. Money management, what kind of bank accounts exist, when to start saving none of this information is provided. Students are expected to just pick this all up by themselves. If only money management was given as much importance as other things.

  • Schools do not talk about other fields besides the traditionally considered honorable ones

Not everyone is going to be an engineer, teacher, or doctor. Some of us will be lawyers, some will work in writing, some will be entrepreneurs, and some will open shops. These all are honorable jobs yet schools do not seem to open pathways for them. Our education system seems almost negligent of them. These other fields need to be shown as viable options to students. Such narrowed future careers will only hold back students who are good at other things but were forced into conventional jobs. This is another one of the education system issues.

  • Stream system

Students after 10th get to choose streams and yet they do not get really varied options. It’s PCM or PCB or Commerce, then there could be a language and one more additional subject.

These constraining choices do not offer varied career options. Students either lose out on some of their preferred subjects because a variation of their liking wasn’t available or they compromise aren’t truly given the option to experiment. This traditional segregation has been addressed in the NEP 2020 although it has yet to be implemented.

  • Our education system failed to make learning fun

It seems silly but school curriculums or maybe how they taught those topics made them extremely boring and dreary. Honestly, how could learning be such a dull place? Humans to their core seek innovation and surprise, yet schools do not seem to be a happy place for many students. Maybe it was the relentless scorecards that needed to be as’ or maybe we standardized learning to make the student fit the system and not the other way round.

Which is one of the major problems in the education system in India? It is just sad how students are produced like factory-manufactured products, all needed to fit the same mold.

  • Our education system does not give space to be different

No two fingerprints are the same, no two humans are similar and yet we have a standardized system for every kid. We expect every kid to have the same learning speed, similar ways of understanding, and the same performance. It seems as if education system issues warrants to produce a batch of identical kids. It is extremely sad how strict and rigid a system of growth has become.

Conclusion

So, these are the current problems in the education system in India, and changes are needed some of them were addressed in NEP 2020 policy, which we can hope gets implemented in an effective way that nourishes growth. Some issues mentioned above would still need to be addressed sooner or later and we can only hope for the growth of our education system.
